THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE IT POSSIBLE
Virginia IruritaI was born in northern Spain in 1962. Coming from a family of travelers, I am always on the road exploring Spain, Portugal and the rest of the world. After more than a decade working in Citibank both in Madrid and in London, I realized I could not go on living such a boring life, so I decided to follow my passions. I love art, history, archeology, taking pictures, reading biographies and traveling to discover other cultures, and to learn about different ways of living. My favorite things about the Spanish lifestyle are the aperitif time in busy tapas bars, eating out, spending time with friends, visiting them in their homes, and exploring the countryside, and I feel right at home in Portugal, where the people share the same joy for life. I am such a fan of Spanish and Portuguese wines that I even bought a vineyard in the Ribera del Duero a few years ago!It became clear that my love for the Spanish lifestyle and our history, culture and art was taking me away from my work, so I left the bank to live the wonderful adventure of hosting travelers in Spain by founding Made for Spain in 1999. But alas, over the years of planning travels throughout Spain, I began to feel that we were lacking something. My love for the Portuguese culture and history called to me constantly, and I realized that our clients were missing out on an important part of Iberia. In January 2016 we expanded our services to include Portugal, and I feel overjoyed to see how our two countries complement each other perfectly, and to watch our clients discover the same. Our company has finally become what it was always meant to be: Made for Spain & Portugal, serving inspired travelers throughout the Iberian Peninsula and our islands.
Alonso Álvarez de Toledo
Once, when I was about 15 years old, I was on top of a ski lift 8,000 feet over the French Alps and I thought to myself: one day I would really love to have a newspaper and a travel agency. I assumed these were thoughts one has when lacking sufficient oxygen, but a few years later I ended up being the editor of my school newspaper, and further down the road becoming a co-owner of Made for Spain & Portugal, probably one of the best travel agencies in the world. Having lived in 7 different countries and visited around 35 countries all over the globe, I must admit there is nothing like Spain, and I feel very lucky to be able to share our beautiful, interesting, exciting, fun and surprising country with you… On a personal note, I love to run, be with my friends, read, travel (of course) and, above all, spend time with my wife, Leticia, and my two adorable children, Tomas and Isabella.
“But for some travelers, money isn’t the issue; it’s getting exactly what you want, when you want it. As Rozanne Silverwood of Reston, Va., says of her family’s recent two weeks with local operator Made for Spain: It was a dream trip in every way. Our guides were superb, and drivers made the experience a vacation rather than a headache. They even managed to engage our three teenage daughters in the local culture, now that’s really saying something.”
“Virginia Irurita, probablemente la más veterana en este juego de anfitriones premium. En 1999 aparcó su carrera en el sector financiero y fundó Made for Spain, un receptivo de lujo centrado en el mercado estadounidense y que hoy goza de excelente reputación. Miembro de la exclusiva asociación Virtuoso, que reúne a los mejores agentes de viajes del mundo, algún que otro miembro de la lista Forbes se ha puesto en manos de esta discreta profesional cuando ha recalado en nuestro país.”
“I wanted to thank you again for your support in creating and delivering a very memorable trip for the Murphy Family… Thank you again for all of your help… Thanks again so very much and I look forward to working with you again and recommending you to other travel professional associates.”
I began my career in photography and filmmaking by working with the top Spanish photographers in international magazines, but have moved on to run my own production company. I like expressing myself through photography as it helps me transmit how I see and feel the world.
“I used to travel because of my job, and I learned a lot of different things about travel photography from my trips. I love sharing these tips and experiences with my clients at Made for Spain & Portugal.”
Mencía González-Barros Caruncho is an experienced fashion designer that comes from a family with more than a century of experience in the art of haute couture.
“She may be famous for her on-trend store Arquitectura Humana, but what many people don’t realize is that she also hosts insider fashion trips. Mencía knows Madrid fashion. A designer herself, she owns trendsetting store Arquitectura Humana. She also leads private tours of the city’s leading style circles…”

BFA, Cooper Union School of Art. MFA, Yale University. Ph.D. in Art and Entrepreneurship, Nebrija University. I´m an artist, a University professor and an Academic Director with more than 20 years of experience promoting Art Education in Spain and developing an original and distinct body of work as a painter. Thanks to Made for Spain & Portugal I can share my passion for Art and for Spain´s unique cultural heritage with extraordinary people.
“As an artist, my inspiration comes from my everyday life, looking at ordinary objects, people and surroundings. When I´m not working in my studio, you will find me either at the Prado Museum, learning from the great masters like Titian, Velazquez, Zurbaran, El Greco or Goya, who captured light and form so masterfully in their paintings, or visiting contemporary art galleries, taking the pulse of Madrid´s inspiring contemporary art scene.”

“I believe that guiding is essentially sharing: we share our knowledge and our understanding of current Spain, its people, its cheerful lifestyle, its food and wine, its mesmerizing art; but, most important, we share our fascination for our country's complexity...and we share the fun of being a Spaniard!”
